- Relatives, Friends, and Neighbors Husk 15 acres of Corn for Clarence QUANDT: Clarence QUANDT, who operates a 320 acre farm near Kinmundy, has been confined to his bed for the past 6 weeks suffering with a nervous disturbance. At the time, he was receiving treatment in the St. Vincent Sanitarium in St. Louis. When taken ill, Clarence had 40 acres of corn still in the field. As several more of you realize, we have not had any picking weather for sometime. Now the corn has gone down and is past picking. Mr. Fred KLEISS, Clarence’s father-in-law, has been doing a little shocking with a team. He had whittled the field down to about 33 acres. On Jan. 23, 14 men with 7 teams went in and cleaned up about 18 acres more of this field for Clarence. That leaves only another 15 acres and our guess is that as soon as it freezes again, another gang will go in and finish that field. Relatives, neighbors and friends participating were Arthur PARRILL and son, Clifford, Dan HIESTAND, Earl LANE, Walter WEISS, Carroll SIMMONS, B.F. LINTON, Kenneth ARMSTRONG, Virgil SEE and Fred KLEISS from Kinmundy; and August QUANDT and son, Lester, Harold HAHN, and George WIEHLE of Iuka. This was indeed a good neighborly act. - Two Boys Go Fishing in Kentucky and Have Bad Scare as Car Upsets Shanty: A.H. MILLER and Lavern KEEN spent last week at Cumberland Lake, Ky. fishing. They report they bad luck. They didn’t catch many fish and a little more bad luck besides that. Mr. MILLER felt a rock on which he was sitting, move a little. He reached down to straighten the rock and a snake bit him on the arm. The snake was under the rock. And then there was some more bad luck. The boys left their car parked on a hill to visit a "hall of meditation" set high up on a bluff. One of the boys came out in time to see their car rolling backwards toward the shanty. He yelled and the other lad just got out when the car struck, knocking the small building over the bluff into the lake 100 feet below. Luckily, the car stopped when it when it struck the building. And luckily no one was in the building when it hurled into the lake. Now there are two morals to this story. One is the fish are just as big here as they are anywhere else. And second, some fellows should carry a car anchor with them when they go fishing.
