St. Louis Post-Dispatch Cardinals Dodgers NLDS preview - 10/5/2004

What an amazing year!!!  The first World Series since 1987!  It was a year that started out with high hopes and didn't disappoint!  They started out slow, but on June 12th finally broke into first place to stay.  From May 27th to September 26th, the Birds went 80-30!!!

What a line-up they had:

AVG    RUNS    HITS    2B    HR     RBI

   Larry Walker     .280       29      42     7     11      27   (150 games)

   Albert Pujols      .331      133     196    51    46    123

    Jim Edmonds     .301       102    150    38    42    111

    Scott Rolen      .314       109    157    32    34    124

    Reggie Sanders    .260    64     116    27    22     67

I think the differences from last year were no major injuries for most of the season and the ability to win the close games.  Izzy had a club tying 47 saves.

Although they made it to the World Series, they just seemed to run out of gas as the Series started in Boston.  I think maybe if they had gotten past that first game with a win, the Series would have turned out different.   However, even if the Cards would have won the Series, it wouldn't have made a difference because this was the year of the Red Sox.  The Sox would have gotten all the attention no matter what...

Let's get ready for 2005!

Three pitchers had 15 wins for the Cards this year!  Matt Morris (15-10), Jason Marquis (15-7) and Chris Carpenter (15-5)

Catcher Mike Matheny ends his MLB record 252 games of errorless baseball on August 4th. (dating back to 8/1/2002)

ESPN aired "Utilityman: Quest for Cooperstown," a tongue-in-cheek show about two guys who travel to Cooperstown in an attempt to get Cardinals player Jose Oquendo elected to the Hall of Fame.

The 2004 team may go down as one of the best Cardinal teams in a very long time.

Some key moments this year:

- April 22:  Hector Luna's squeeze bunt scores Reggie Sanders from third base in the 12th inning of a 2-1 win, capping a three-game sweep of the Astros at Houston.  The win makes St. Louis 6-0 on the road, the Redbirds' best start away from home since 1941.

- June 11: The Cardinals beat Texas 12-7 to go into first place for the first time all year.  They never trailed in the division standings again.

- July 20:  Albert Pujols hits three home runs - and So Taguchi hits another, in addition to making a game-saving catch against the Wrigley Field ivy - as the Cardinals rally from a 7-1 deficit to shock the Cubs 11-8 in the last regular-season meeting between the two teams in 2004.

- Aug 20: The Cardinals sweep a doublehearder from Pittsburgh a day after losing back-to-back games for the only time in the month.  The twinbill sweep gives the Cards 80 wins in their first 122 games.

- Sept 20:  The Cardinals win 7-4 over the Brewers, earning the NL Central Division title outright for the third time in five years.  The champagne party, delayed when the Cards lost Sept. 19 in St. Louis, takes place in the visiting clubhouse in Milwaukee.
